Luxury: A fixed definition or a subjective statement?

Mykonos has emerged as one of the most luxurious islands in the world. Having lived on the island for over 10 years, I can describe all of its paved alleys and corners, long sandy beaches, and whitewashed houses with my eyes closed. As the founder and CEO of Ideal Mykonos, a real estate agency, I always aim to provide our clients with an unforgettable and lavish experience on the island. However, luxury seems to be multifaceted and is interpreted in various ways by different people.

Luxury in Mykonos

Luxury in Mykonos

A strict definition describes luxury as “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense” (Oxford dictionary). Does luxury always require great expense? I think not necessarily. It is closely related to our personal characteristics, experiences, and needs. It is the feeling that satisfies and involves all of our senses: sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste. If you walk into a beautiful villa or a yacht, and it meets your requirements, but there is an uncomfortable feeling, then it fails to satisfy one of your senses. That’s why satisfying all of our senses is the key to the ultimate luxurious experience.

Luxury in Mykonos

For those who can relate to this definition, luxury is the view from the couch of the sun disappearing into the endless blue sea. It is the touch of the golden sand while lying on the beach and the sound of the crystal blue waters that glare at you. It is the smell and taste of a delicious Mediterranean meal made from fresh products.

Luxury, in Mykonos goes far beyond money

Luxury, in Mykonos goes far beyond money

In Mykonos, luxury extends well beyond these things. It’s having the option of swimming at a popular, crowded beach while gazing at fabulous yachts, sipping on champagne, and grooving to the beats of a popular DJ, or of going diving at a quiet beach where the only sounds are of the seagulls enjoying the sunshine and sparkling waters with you. It is the option of where you will eat your meals. You can go to a local taverna by the sea, where Kyra Sia will appear in her apron and handkerchief to rub your back and ask if you enjoyed her traditional Greek food. Or, would you prefer a restaurant with Michelin stars, where you will savor your food and drinks while surrounded by exceptional professionalism? Last but not least, the in-house chef prepares everything, from your utensils to your gravy.
